Last night I had the privilege of attending a special event that announced the winning design of the smart and OCAD University design competition. The design was unveiled at OCADU’s project 31 art auction.

Click to watch the film Ariad created to showcase the story behind the design’s creation.

Justin Merk, a student in the faculty of design, won the competition with his concept that fused technology and creative thinking. As an extreme sports enthusiast, Justin said his idea was inspired by the energy brought out in these sports. His concept included artfully arranged QR codes.

Ariad worked with Justin, smart and OCADU to bring to his concept to life. I personally worked with Justin to push his design even further. We suggested that the QR codes work. So if a passerby was to take a picture of the car with their Smartphone, they would automatically be taken to smart’s Facebook page.

When the design was finalized we worked with Krystal Levy Pictures and OCADU to create a short documentary that featured a smart car wrapped in Justin’s winning design. The film show’s Justin’s creative process – how he conceptualized and executed his idea.

It’s always great to support up and coming creative talent like Justin. We are proud to have been part of this project connecting smart with OCADU’s future design thinkers.
